Monel K500 material is a nickel-copper alloy that combines the superior corrosion resistance of Monel 400 with the advantages of increased strength and hardness. These enhanced properties, strength and hardness are obtained by adding aluminum and titanium to the nickel-copper matrix and by heat treatments used to achieve precipitation, commonly known as age-hardening or aging.
Under age-hardening conditions, Monel alloy K-500 is more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking than Monel alloy 400 in certain environments. Compared to Alloy 400, Alloy K-500 has approximately three times the yield strength and approximately twice the tensile strength of Alloy 400.
In addition, it can be further strengthened by cold working prior to precipitation hardening. This nickel steel alloy retains its strength at temperatures as high as 1200°F, but retains its ductility and toughness at temperatures as low as 400°F. Its melting range is 2400-2460°F.
