Monel 400 material is a nickel-copper alloy (approx. 67% Ni - 23% Cu) resistant to high temperature seawater and steam as well as salt and caustic solutions. Alloy 400 is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold working. This nickel alloy is characterized by good corrosion resistance, good weldability and high strength. It has a low corrosion rate in fast-flowing brackish or seawater, excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most freshwaters, and its resistance to a wide range of corrosive conditions makes it widely used in marine applications and other non-oxidizing chloride solutions. This nickel alloy is particularly resistant to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids after degassing. As would be expected with its high copper content, the 400 alloy is rapidly attacked by nitric acid and ammonia systems.
